„In April last year, there were many Swedish Tokio Hotel fans who were disappointed, because the German group cancelled their sold-out gig at Hovet when the singer Bill Kaulitz got problems with his vocal cords. Bill had his surgery and now the band is back on its feet.
How do you feel now, Bill?
„It feels good. Everything is as before. But it was awful to disappoint all the fans the way we did. It is among the worst you can do as a singer”, he says when Metro meets the band at the Sheraton Hotel in Stockholm.
After the operation, Tokio Hotel had two tours in the US, which the Swedish fans reacted to. On a lot of sites they write that group has betrayed Europe.
„We can not split ourselves and be everywhere at the same time. We do our best to satisfy all requests. In 2010, we plan to do a big tour and then we would love to come to Sweden. Nothing is decided yet but we are sure that we will come here“, Bill says.
It seems that people either love or hate you. Is that how you feel too?
- Yes, and that is nothing new for us. Tom and I grew up that way. Even as kids, we brought much hatred against us and we do not want it any other way.
Why were you hated as children?
„We stood out. We were children who spoke out on everything and everyone, and it was not so common. Both our appearance and behaviour stuck out” Bill says.
Today, Tokio Hotel releases their single „Automatic“ and in early October, their eighth album.[It actually said eight album in the article]. Bill says that the new record is different from the previous ones
„We have tried new things and took our time. There is a lot of programming and it is a bit more electronic. But it’s still rock, of course.
Are you not afraid that the fans will think it is too different? – You can hear a difference but so we haven’t changed that much. Everyone is afraid of change but it can also mean that it gets better. We promise that this is the best album the fans have heard.
Fan questions to Tokio Hotel:
Sandra: Could you ever fall love with someone who is three years younger than you?
- Of course! Three years is not that much. Age does not matter, but now maybe I should not say too much. Me and Bill hit puberty [direct translation would be reach sexual maturity] very early. „laughs Tom.

George, how long did it take before you began to trust your girlfriend?
- It went pretty fast. You develop felling of whether a person is serious or not.

George: I’d be an eagle because I would get to fly.

Gustav: I would be a turtle so I can be lazy and hibernate over winter.
Bill: I also choose a dog I think. It depends on who is the master. If I was a dog I’d probably like to have me as the master.“

5. Oktober 2009„Tokio Hotel waren noch immer nicht in Tokio, aber ein Jahr lang auf Rückzug aus der Öffentlichkeit. Im SPIEGEL-ONLINE-Interview sprechen Bill und Tom Kaulitz über ihr Popstar-Leben, das neue Album und das Problem, wenn man plötzlich die Nase von sich selbst voll hat.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Einige der neuen Songs auf Ihrem neuen Album „Humanoid“ handeln wieder von einer unbestimmten Sehnsucht, diesem Gefühl der inneren Zerrissenheit, zwischen zwei Welten zu leben. Glauben Sie, dass auch ältere Menschen sich mit diesen Themen noch identifizieren können?
Bill Kaulitz: Zwischen den Welten haben wir schon als Kinder gelebt. Da wo wir aufgewachsen sind, haben wir uns oft wie Aliens gefühlt, tun wir heute auch noch oft. Das Gefühl hat uns immer begleitet. Vom Privatleben, wovon nicht so wirklich viel übrig ist, bis hin zum Bandalltag. Mein Leben ist voll von Mauern und ich bin zerfressen von Sehnsucht in alle möglichen Richtungen. Aber ich glaube, eine unbestimmte Sehnsucht tragen viele Menschen in sich, das hat mit Alter nichts zu tun.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Was sagen Sie zu dem Vorwurf, dass man selbst ein paar gescheiterte Beziehungen in seinem Leben gehabt haben sollte, um über zerbrochene Liebe singen zu können?
Bill Kaulitz : Das sollen die Leute mir ruhig weiter vorwerfen. Oder meinen Sie, ich soll jetzt mal so’n paar richtig herzzerreißende Trennungsgeschichten aus meiner Vergangenheit erzählen, damit das endlich aus der Welt ist?
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Nur zu.
Bill Kaulitz : Vergessen Sie’s!
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Bill, Sie sind 2006 bei einer Sendung auf ProSieben zum „nervigsten Deutschen“ gewählt worden. Schmerzt Sie so etwas?
Bill Kaulitz: Nö, ich kannte diese Sendung nicht, aber ich bin nachher natürlich darauf angesprochen worden. Aber da wurden mir doch schon ganz andere Sachen an den Kopf geworfen. Unabhängig davon muss ich sagen, dass ich im letzten Jahr unsere eigenen Fressen selbst nicht mehr sehen konnte. Wir haben dann auch versucht, uns ein Jahr lang aus der Öffentlichkeit zurückzuziehen und uns dann mit unseren Produzenten im Studio einzuschließen und hinterm Mischpult zu verschanzen.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Ihre neue CD „Humanoid“ klingt noch etwas opulenter, erwachsener und besser produziert als die beiden ersten Platten. Wieviel haben Sie selbst, wieviel hat das Produzenten-Team zum Album beigesteuert?
Tom Kaulitz: Beim Songwriting hat sich nicht viel geändert, wir haben die Songs wieder zusammen mit unseren Produzenten geschrieben. Wir haben diesmal nur mehr experimentiert und uns mehr Zeit gelassen. Meistens waren es Textideen von Bill, auf die wir dann zusammen alles aufgebaut haben.
Bill Kaulitz: Wir haben uns viel mehr und sehr detailverliebt in die Produktion eingebracht. Wir haben bei diesem Album zum ersten Mal co-produziert.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Gibt es etwas, das Ihnen im Nachhinein an „Schrei“ und „Zimmer 483″ nicht mehr gefällt?
Bill Kaulitz: Also richtig albern finde ich ja, wenn man beim zweiten oder dritten Album sagt: „Das vorher waren ja noch nicht wirklich wir, aber jetzt auf diesem Album haben wir uns endlich gefunden, jetzt stecken wir da wirklich drin.“
Tom Kaulitz: Und das dann auch noch als Begründung nehmen, das neue Album nach sich selbst zu benennen. Nein, wir mögen unsere alten Alben. Und wir wollen uns von ihnen auch nicht distanzieren. Wenn wir das Gefühl hätten, dass wir das müssten, dann hätten wir ein Problem.
Bill Kaulitz: Wir haben uns bei „Humanoid“ nicht vorgenommen, irgendetwas an der Art, Platten aufzunehmen, zu ändern. Dass wir Sachen anders machen, haben wir erst nach und nach beim Produzieren gemerkt. Das Einzige, was wir uns vorgenommen hatten, war, das Album nicht abzugeben, bevor wir es selbst lieben, egal wie viel Zeitdruck uns die Plattenfirma macht.
Tom Kaulitz: Und das haben wir dann auch durchgezogen. Das gab ganz schön Stress hinter den Kulissen wegen des Timings der Albumabgabe.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Allein schon durch Ihren Bandnamen wecken Sie Assoziationen zum J-Pop, zu Visual Kei und fernöstlichem Glam. Wahren Sie inzwischen schon einmal in Tokio und vielleicht sogar im Viertel Harajuku, wo sich die Cosplayer und Gothic-Freaks treffen?
Tom Kaulitz: Wir waren leider immer noch nicht in Tokio! Aber wir lieben die Stadt, auch ohne dort gewesen zu sein. Als Kids haben wir immer davon geträumt, eines Tages in Tokio zu sein. Irgendwie will man sich den Traum aber auch nicht erfüllen. Dann ist er ja ausgeträumt, und das will ich mir lieber noch aufheben. Für mich ist es immer wichtig, Ziele und Wünsche vor mir zu sehen.
Bill Kaulitz: Außerdem ist die Stadt ja vielleicht gar nicht so geil wie wir glauben. Und dann: wieder ein Traum zerstört.
